Zhejiang Province's first user-side vanadium flow battery"long-term energy storage" project is connected to the grid

 

On May 8, 2024, Zhejiang Province’s first “long-duration energy storage” project, the 500 kW/5 MWh vanadium flow energy storage power station, was officially connected to the grid and put into operation. This project uses an vanadium flow battery, which can continuously provide electricity demand for up to 4-10 hours. After being connected to the grid, it can also continuously deliver electricity to the grid for 4-10 hours, helping the grid to overcome the load of peak electricity consumption. It not only provides a more economical and efficient energy solution model, but also meets the needs of long-term stable operation of the power system.

 

 

The annual energy storage capacity of this energy storage power station is approximately 1 million kilowatt hours. The new vanadium flow battery selected for this project relies on the back-and-forth circulation of aqueous electrolyte and storage tanks to achieve the purpose of heat dissipation. It does not have the problems of thermal runaway and short circuit in lithium batteries. It is safer, more reliable and environmentally friendly than traditional lithium batteries and longer service life.

 

 

At the same time, the project can upload real-time data on the energy storage status of the energy storage station to the grid system through meter installation, monitor the operation of user-side energy storage, and charge and discharge the energy storage station in line with the grid load demand to improve Coordination and control of user-side resources, flexible aggregation of users to participate in the power market, and promotion of scientific, healthy and orderly development of user-side energy storage. On the other hand, users can also receive corresponding economic subsidies through off-peak charging and peak discharge to the grid, effectively reducing corporate energy costs.

 

 

This project promotes the comprehensive development of the energy storage business, helps realize the optimization and transformation of the energy structure, improves energy security capabilities, and strengthens the construction of regional green and low-carbon transformation development demonstration zones.
